Hello, Sorry for the late reply. The smell of tar in the stools would generally suggest blood in your stool which has mixed with the stool. If your stools are dark then that's a definitive positive sign. However even if they are not, you should still go in for investigations for the stool test which can reveal hidden bleeding which cannot be seen with naked eye. Consult your physician who can also advise you to go in for a colonoscopy and an upper gastroendoscopy tests to detect any internal bleeding source from within the whole gastrointestinal tract.
