What are the changes of getting aids? Hello, My mom is a nurse and as of yesterday she was reporting to the room of a patient in the nursing home she works in. When she entered she notices her patient had passed away as she was face down on the floor. She called the ambulance and they advise she shoudl draw blood thus my mom did they also wanted her to check her blood sugar or something like that by pocking the patients finger. Well as she was doing so the paramedics came in and startled her at which point she accidentally poked herself with the needle which she explained went all the way in i don't know how long these things are usually. Any way i looked and it seems that the chances are small but how much do they increase as she stated she does not use automated machine and in most cases she can see blood on the needle. please help with any information i don't know how to make my mom stop crying she is really scared.

Hi, how are you doing today ? As for your question , the health professionals are always at risk of contarcting these iatrogenic infections, especially the nurses who are involved in blood drawing etc. After a needle prick injury there are 5 % chances of contracting AIDS , but there is something called an POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLACTIC REGIME , that is a set group of anti retro viral tablet course will be given which will reduce the incidence and prevent you from getting aids. So consult a physician and get a PCR AND WESTRN BLOT TESTS done and he will start up any drugs accordingly if required. Hope this clears out your question, hope to converse with you again.
