Skin Cancer - Pimple turns into a black scab looking head

I had what I thought was a pimple on the side of my face for a few weeks, getting ready for bed last night and realized the "pimple" now has a black scab looking head? Never picked or tried to pop it the whole time I have had it, so it took me by surprise to see the change. It never really felt like a pimple no tenderness or head. Just wondering your thoughts. I am fair skinned, freckled and a red head. I have a appt. set up with family DR. for 4/4. Should I try to get in earlier? Thanks for any help.

Hi, You seem to have a high-risk skin profile. It is good that you are keeping yourself informed. Dramatic changes tend to be more inflammatory than cancer. The changes over a few weeks is atypical for skin cancer. Although the absence of any tenderness may mean it is not inflammatory (unless it is pretty small, that the pain is minimal). . Maintain good hygiene (keep it clean), but be gentle – avoid getting it injured. The visit to the doctor is a good step. This will have the opportunity of better recording of the lesion in question and serves as a baseline picture for comparison to subsequent monitoring. I don’t think the appointment on April 4 is too far off.
