Welcome. There are a number of conditions which cause pain in the face and causes of chronic pain are usually neuropathic.Post-herpetic neuralgia caused by the reactivation of a virus (varicella-zoster virus) which lies dormant in nerve roots after chicken-pox infection.Post-herpetic neuralgia is defined as pain persisting 3 months or more after the onset of the shingles. The trigeminal nerve is one of the largest nerves in the head (also called 5th cranial nerve), there is one on each side and they supply most of the sensation to the face.Another possibility is trigeminal neuralgia a disorder of the trigeminal nerve which causes intermittent episodes of sudden, intense, stabbing pain in the face. Each burst of pain lasts for only a few seconds, but there can be many of these bursts of pain in quick succession. They may come and go throughout the day and last for days, weeks, or months, and then disappear for months or years. The pains may be triggered by everyday activities such as talking, eating, brushing.Other causes are glossopharyngeal nurlagia, atypical facial pain and temperomandibular joint dysfunction. You need to be evaluated before confirming the diagnosis.Good luck.
