Dear Ellie007 hard poop can be due to insufficient fibre in diet, inadequate fluid intake, decreased physical activity, side effect of medicines(antidepressants, iron etc)hypothyroidism, diabetes etc. Because of the hard stool you might be developing anal fissure, which can cause bleeding and pain . You should keep your stool soft, by taking fibre in diet ,plenty of fruits and vegetables; take plenty of fluids, avoid soft drinks and soups with lot of salt; avoid processed food; exercise; spending less time to defecate and empty bowels as soon as you get the urge to do that; sitz bath ;topical creams available are helpful but use after consulting a doctor. You can take laxative to make the stool soft.Get in touch with a doctor for further assistance. Take care.
